Our Story
The Birth of a child is one of the most transforming times of
your life and one that you will remember FOREVER. You
should have a positive memory of your birth experience: an
experience that you are prepared for, understand fully and
anticipate greatly. I can help you achieve the birth you desire
in Bermuda, introducing your baby to the world on your
terms.
Conscious Birth Bermuda
For those of you who are new to Bermuda or are unsure of
Bermuda's birthing climate, here is a little history:
- There are 4 practicing Obstetricians: Dr. Emma Robinson, Dr. Wendy Woods, Dr. Carla
Ming-Reece, and Dr. Terry Lynn Emery. The latter has expressed an interest in exploring water
birth. Dr. Ian Fulton and Dr. Dale Wilmot practice Gynecology only. There is an "ON CALL"
weekend rotation of the OBs, which means that there is no guarantee that you will have your
chosen care provider for your birth.
-Due to the Midwifery Act 1949 (www.bermudalaws.bm). Our local midwives were forced out of
practicing their ancient art back in the late 60s early 70s. (Both my brother and I were born at
home on Cedar Hill in Warwick under the expert care of a midwife in 1969 and 1971). Why did
birth move into the hospital? Rent Ricky Lakes' film 'The Business of Being Born'
-There are only TWO Bermudian, practicing midwives on the registry to date:
Tandy Deane Gray and Pandora Hartman. Both have chosen to live and practice their ancient
art elsewhere in the world as they do not agree to the substandard current state of affairs with
Bermuda's Maternity system. They will fly in to attend the births of informed parents. Lisa
Dalporto, CNM is an American Midwife who is on the Bermuda Midwife registry. See "The 5
steps to planning your safe and satisfying home birth in Bermuda" for more information.
- There are approximately 18 midwives on staff at our only hospital, KEMH, at any given time.
These hard working women are over worked as there is a serious shortage world wide of
midwives. Recruitment to Bermuda is poor due to the fact that the midwives cannot practice
their art on the island. They are contracted on work permits to work solely for the hospital.
Simply put, they are not allowed to catch babies but must follow the orders of the OBs and call
them when the birth of the baby is imminent. They function as Obstetric nurses. If you labour
quickly, you may be lucky to have your baby caught by a midwife.
-Insurance companies dictate how the OBs must practice. There is the insane cost of sky
rocketing medical malpractice insurance,( which is passed on to every low risk pregnant
woman who seeks care from the dominating OB model of care on the island by a mandatory
$500-$800 additional fee. This must be paid up front and it is not refundable, negotiable or
covered by ones medical insurance).
I call it the intervention down payment !
With the soothing ocean all around us , it's no wonder women of Bermuda are attracted to laboring and birthing in water.
